"Libraries Are the Heart of Our Communities"

The 2007 conference, which will take place May 10 - 12th in Kelowna,  is a "stand alone" event for BCLTA - it has been planned and organized by trustees, with trustee training and networking needs in mind.   The program for this year's conference is outstanding.

“Hon. Mike Harcourt, Keynote Speaker
— Sustainable Solutions: the Role of Libraries”

Our conference kicks off on Thursday night with the Honourable Mike Harcourt as our keynote speaker on the topic of "Sustainable Solutions:  The Role of Libraries".  On Friday morning our plenary speaker, Wendy Newman, a distinguished librarian and public advocate for libraries, will directly address the theme of the conference "Libraries are the Heart of our Communities".   Throughout the conference there are 12 workshop sessions to chose from including  panel discussions, featured speakers and roundtable discussions.   In addition there is an opportunity to hear directly from the new Director of Public Library Services and to attend the BCLTA Annual General Meeting and elections.

As with any conference, networking is an important reason to attend as well.  We have scheduled generous coffee breaks to allow trustees to talk informally.  As well, there are two key social events - the President's Reception on Thursday night and the Awards Banquet on Friday.   We will also be taking time at the Awards Banquet to recognize and celebrate BCLTA's 30th anniversary.

It is our goal to ensure that all library boards in BC are represented at the conference this year.  We've chosen a location outside the Lower Mainland to increase accessibility for trustees from all around BC and we hope that the choice of Kelowna, a popular vacation destination, will be an additional incentive for you to join us.  However, if your board requires some financial assistance in order to participate, registration subsidies are available.  For details, click on the button marked "Registration Information" along the right hand column of this page, and the look under the "Fees" section.

We look forward to seeing you in Kelowna in May.
