2009/10 Provincial Library Funding Campaign
In summer 2009, over 30,000 British Columbians sent in postcards and signed a Fraser Valley Regional Library petition requesting that the provincial government maintain public library funding in the 2009 Budget. Public libraries around the province also hosted MLA Receptions and sent letters to the Minister of Education and Premier Campbell stressing the essential nature of library service and the need to maintain and support access to public library resources.
Because of these efforts and a concerted advocacy campaign on the part of the BC Library Trustees Association, the BC Library Association and the Association of BC Public Library Directors, recent cuts to library funding were kept to a minimum and libraries received 78% of their expected funding for 2009/10.
Thank you for your contribution – we truly couldn’t have done it without you – and stay tuned for future advocacy initiatives. Our next goal is to see 100% of provincial public library funding reinstated; and our ultimate aim is to see an increase in funding levels corresponding with the increased library usage we are seeing across BC. |
